Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about this calculator.
What is the difference between long-term and short-term capital gains?
Long-term gains apply to assets held 12 months or longer and are taxed at preferential rates of 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on your income. Short-term gains (held under 12 months) are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal federal rate — the same as wages.
What are the 2025 long-term capital gains thresholds?
For single filers in 2025, the 0% rate applies to gains up to $47,025, 15% from $47,025 to $518,900, and 20% above $518,900. Married filing jointly thresholds are roughly double. Our calculator uses single-filer thresholds.
Do states tax capital gains?
Yes — most states tax capital gains as ordinary income at their regular income-tax rates. A few states offer reduced rates or exclusions for capital gains. Our calculator applies your state's effective income-tax rate as an approximation.
